Two Malvern Prep student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to continue their athletic careers in college: David Matasic will row for the U.S. Naval Academy and Thomas Mershon will swim for Penn State University.
David Matasic – U. S. Naval Academy
David Matasic, son of Carol and Chuck Matasic will row for the U.S. Naval Academy’s Lightweight Crew Team. Matasic has been a three-year varsity rower and serves as a team captain for Malvern Head Coach Craig Hoffman. Matasic teamed with Bill Doughty to take first place at the 2009 Scholastic National Championships and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in the Lightweight Double. He is also vice president of the National Art Honor Society at Malvern and a member of the National Science Honor Society, as well as the Envirothon and Speak-up committees.
Matasic is elated with his appointment to the Naval Academy and points to the environment of the Academy, a calling toward military service, his future teammates and students, the academic programs and the Navy coaching staff as reasons for his decision.
Thomas Mershon – Penn State University
Thomas Mershon, son of Janie and John Mershon, will swim for Penn State University next year. Mershon is a four-year varsity swimmer for Malvern Head Coach Paul Hornsleth. Last season, Mershon was and All-Inter-Ac and All-Main Line selection and earned All-American status in the 200 individual medley.
Mershon is excited to continue his swimming career at the next level and looks forward to swimming under Penn State Head Coach John Hargis, a gold-medalist at the 1996 Olympic Games.
